History of the Car Wrap

Where did it begin or how did it come about? It started off with vehicle graphics. Vehicle graphics in the mid 1800’s were often found on horse-drawn wagons and carriages, painted with family crests to show pride and display ownership of property. Traveling salesmen then started painting letters on their carts and wagons to help sell their wares and identify themselves as a brand. These were some of the earliest forms of vehicle advertising on record. It is said that in 1926, the invention of plasticized polyvinyl chloride was accidentally discovered by BF Goodrich. Back then most of the vehicle graphics had been created by hand painting and stencils, which was a very time consuming process that lacked consistency. The US Air Force was one of the few that could actually afford the high premium of vinyl decals for their aircraft. Then in the 1980’s vinyl production cost and the die-cutting technology became affordable enough for the common small business owner to be able to afford this new type of advertising. In 1993 we enter the age of vinyl wraps and digital printing. Starting with Germany had many Mercedes Benz taxis in various colors that needed to be painted beige as required by law. The most affordable way to do this was by applying beige vinyl wraps over all of the black taxis. It was introduced by Kay Premium Marketing Films as a new way to restyle automobiles. This then led to an exciting new industry. Almost three years later when service was complete, the vinyl was removed leaving pristine black paint without scratches. This creation not only greatly improved the resale value by protecting the paint during its taxi life, it also saved money by eliminating complete resprays. Thus the complete vehicle wrap was born and has since become an industry of its own. Since then companies around the world began developing their own wrapping specific vinyl’s and the revolution took off. As technology has developed, options for features such as gloss, matte, printable and even color-changing vinyl wrap films have become available. Not only has the digital printing age significantly reduced the hours required to achieve the sought after final result. The modern era of vinyl’s and printed graphics has turned vehicle wraps into a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide. As the evolution continues people have now been able to see how versatile vehicle wraps are and how they are used to advertise. Vehicle wraps can navigate the complex curves and crevices of any vehicle, all while maintaining the high quality of the print and appearance. In addition to advertising, people have also used vehicle wraps to customize their own cars. This is especially true for those like celebrities, who want to take that extra step towards customizing their personal vehicles.
